Hotmail Has IMAP And Works On iPhone

Why is this such a great thing. IMAP makes it so that when you read an email on your phone then it will show up as read when you login to your hotmail account from a computer, and vice versa.

It is very simple to setup.

  1. Go to Settings – Mail, Contact, Calendars
  2. Click on Add Account…
  3. Choose Microsoft Exchange
  4. Fill in the fields shown (Leave domain blank and your login should be your email address)
  5. Click next and it will ask for server. Use m.hotmail.com
  6. Choose if you want your email, contacts or calendar synced.photo

Update for Android users:

1. Open the Mail app.
2. Hit the menu button > Add account
3. Enter your hotmail e-mail address and password.
4. Press Manual setup (don’t press Next!)
5. For account, select Exchange.
6. On the Server settings page, clear out the DomainUsername field and enter your hotmail address.
7. Change the Server to m.hotmail.com (without the quotes).
8. Keep the checkboxes the way they are (Use secure connection enabled, but don’t accept all SSL certificates)
9. Press Next.
10. Once the server settings are confirmed, you’ll be asked for how far back you’d like to sync your e-mail, contacts and calendars.

  2. Michelle says:

It keeps saying my password is wrong even though I know for sure I’m putting the right one. Can any one help?

    • Carla says:

I had that problem, till I realized I wasn’t using “@hotmail.com” in my username….even though it says username, it really needs the whole email address..

  3. Duncan says:

I get the same message as Michelle.
Is there some other trick to this?

  4. James says:

Works for me! This is great. Just follow the instructions.

  5. james says:

uhh… IMAP is different from Exhange ActiveSync supported email. Live and Hotmail supports Exchange ActiveSync and POP3, not IMAP.

  6. Gez says:

Superb. Been looking to get IMAP style access to my Hotmail account for ages. Just set this up on my iPad2 without issue. Will shortly be doing the same with my Android phone and laptop.

    Thanks!

  11. Mikey D says:

I’m able to access the Inbox. Just not the other folders. It seems them but no messages show up.

  12. Joel says:

thanks heaps, i’ve been trying to work this out for ages. this will save so much time for me

  13. Russ says:

Hmm, this worked fine on my iPad2, but not so well on my Android handset. On this it won’t allow me to delete messages. If I try to delete one/multiple messages, it re-syncs, putting all messages back in the folder and marking them all as unread.

Any ideas how to remedy this? I can’t find an appropriate option to change.

The handset I’m currently using is the HTC Desire S.

  14. Worked on my Galaxy S with android.

  20. Emma says:

Make sure your password is LESS THAN 16 characters long, when using iphone at least.

  21. Gaz says:

    1000 internets to you sir!!

Like everyone has said, NOT IMAP/IMAP4
but MSExchange which has very similar features.

To anyone not getting messages show up in their folders, GIVE IT TIME – it has to download all your emails depending on how far back you sync.
